Alison Hewitt

Senior Radiographer

NHS HEROS

Alison’s journey into radiography is quite inspiring! Starting from a simple visit to the job centre, she found her path by meeting the academic requirements and showing genuine curiosity during her interview. The interviewer took the time to explain the field to her and even suggested gaining life experience before reapplying. This kind of guidance can make a huge difference in someone’s career.

She has made a significant impact in the field of radiography and cancer awareness, especially within the BME community. Her journey from being the youngest in her course to co-founding MENSoR and advocating for Black and Asian radiographers is truly commendable.

Her collaboration with Dr. Rose Thompson to raise awareness about cancer diagnosis and treatment within the BME community is crucial. Studies have shown that there are disparities in cancer care and outcomes among different ethnic groups, and initiatives like theirs are essential in addressing these inequalities.

Dr. Rose Thompson passed away in June 2023 and her legacy lives on via her family and dedicated friends.

A remarkable individual who has made significant contributions to both the Society of Radiographers (SoR) and the broader community. Her efforts in initiating World Radiography Day and promoting networking among Black professionals are truly inspiring. Alison is part of an SoR steering group aligning mentees with leadership mentors within the profession – currently in its 3rd year.

Her work with UniBlackTalk, which evolved into National Nubian Networking, highlights her dedication to fostering communication and collaboration. By leveraging social media and personal connections, she has effectively promoted events, book launches, highlighted funding and media opportunities, making a substantial impact.

Alison is involved with SeakAid which is a UK-based charity dedicated to recycling and distributing sports kits and equipment to underprivileged children in the UK and the Caribbean.

Their mission is to support social development through sports, and they’ve been active in various projects, including providing essential sports gear and educational resources.

Alison’s efforts, especially after the 2021 volcanic eruption in St Vincent, have made a significant impact.  Securing a large donation of schoolbooks is a fantastic achievement and undoubtedly helped many children in need.

Families in need at home and her workplace have been supplied with a daily delivery of Community Fridge charity donations from her local churches since the start of the 2020 pandemic which Alison collects and distributes.

“Bajaican Blessings” is a beautiful initiative that celebrates her mixed Caribbean heritage and encourages others to explore their own backgrounds creatively. It’s wonderful to see how she uses art to bring people together and celebrate diversity.

It’s inspiring to hear how she has embraced her mixed Caribbean heritage through ‘Bajaican Blessings’ and used her creativity to celebrate her origins.

Alison has participated in NottingHill Carnival alongside London Roller Skate who proudly displayed her donation of Caribbean and African flags as they entertained the crowds.
